The HAWA poultry-rearing program has been a great success. Widows who participate in the program attend poultry training classes. Topics covered include coop construction, vaccinations, chick feeding, disease diagnosis and management. The women are then given coop-making materials. As the coops are constructed, each widow receives 50 chicks, many purchased from past program participants. Participating women are also trained in small business development, marketing, savings and credit, basic literacy, and growing and drying vegetables for personal consumption and sale. All participants are supervised by a team of poultry specialists.
CARE’s Livestock Development Program enables widows to generate income by raising and managing cows and lambs. The milk produced can be sold for profit and supplement their families’ diets. In addition, by-products like manure can be sold or used for kitchen gardens,
and calves can also be sold for profit.
Beyond the 11th’s grant is also being used to promote a widow poultry farmers’ cooperative. Entry into the cooperative is voluntary and members are coached in tactics for improving the quality and sale of chicks through cooperation, decreasing the cost of feed, medicine and other necessities through group purchases. They will also market their goods as a unit to strengthen their negotiating power.
