Speaking Endorsements“Susan Retik shows us how to think beyond ourselves and give to others. It is her heart-wrenching story, from which she draws strength and courage. She teaches us that we all have the ability to make changes for the good. It is her devotion and, ultimately, her magnanimity that inspires us and our Afghan counterparts to work toward better understanding and peace.” —Sarolta Anna Takács, Dean, School of Arts and Sciences Honors Program, “The School of Arts and Sciences Honors Program at Rutgers University invited Susan Retik to campus as part of Rutgers University’s yearlong celebration of the 60th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In the morning, Susan spoke to the students in the SAS Honors Colloquium course and also had lunch with several student leaders. In the evening, we screened Beyond Belief for over 300 faculty, staff, and students. The film was followed by a question and answer session with Susan. “Susan is an outstanding speaker, and her visit had a large and lasting impact on our students. Unlike many lecturers, Susan connected with our students’ hearts and minds. Our students were inspired to learn more about Afghanistan and to get involved with Beyond the 11th and other NGOs. One group of SAS Honors students decided to do their final group project for the Colloquium course about Beyond the 11th, and another group organized a fundraiser for the United Nations World Food Program. After the film, a junior told us that she’d been to many events during her three years at college, and that Susan’s event was, by far, the best.” —Karen Dentler, Assistant Dean, School of Arts and Sciences Honors Program, “Thank you for giving your time and experiences to the cluster with that wonderful assembly. Speaking to all the adults that were present, they though it was one of the best presentations they have seen in a long time. The kids equally enjoyed it and started tying in the information with the novel [The Breadwinner]. For your first time in front of sixth graders, you seemed like you have been presenting to kids for years.” —James Harmon, Grade Six Teacher, Needham Public Schools, Needham, MA |
