CARE International

care logoCARE International works toward hope, tolerance, and social justice, focused on overcoming poverty and enabling people to live in dignity and security. CARE’s Humanitarian Assistance for Widows of Afghanistan (HAWA) program is a manifestation of this vision, serving vulnerable women in Afghanistan by providing sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Beyond the 11th funds projects that directly address CARE’s long-term strategy of helping Afghan women develop sustainable livelihoods through skills training, employment opportunities, and the establishment of links with local markets. The strategy is also fundamental to CARE’s broader mission to end poverty by increasing economic opportunities for these women and by enabling them to exercise their basic rights and live in dignity.

Beyond the 11th has provided multiple grants to HAWA’s Income Generation for Vulnerable Women Through Livestock project, helping widows “graduate” from HAWA’s food relief program by starting income-generating activities, such as poultry and livestock rearing, to help them develop viable businesses and achieve economic self-reliance for their families. These projects have improved the lives of nearly 700 widows in Kabul, helping them gain economic security, thus enabling them to feed their children and send them to school.

By investing year after year in HAWA, Beyond the 11th has had a powerful impact in transforming the lives of impoverished widows in Kabul:

  • In 2004, the Beyond the 11th helped 400 women begin poultry-rearing activities through the purchase of hens, feed rations, and chicken-coop materials.
  • In 2005/2006, with subsequent funding, Beyond the 11th enabled another 200 women to progress from receiving food handouts to launching their own poultry-raising ventures.
  • In 2007/2008 Beyond the 11th’s funding provided 19 women with dairy cows, animal husbandry training, and veterinary services, which subsequently extended to another 21 women as new calves wee born and participants handed over either older calves or the mother cow to HAWA for re-distribution to other widows.
  • In 2009, Beyond the 11th provided another grant for additional 32 women to receive dairy cows.
  • In 2010, Beyond the 11th gave its first grant to CARE for a savings and loan program that will work with 900 widows who are currently participating in the livestock rearing program.

In all of these cases, women not only have been able to generate income for their families’ needs, but have also substantially boosted their household members’ food security and nutritional status through a regular supply of protein-rich foods such as eggs, milk, cheese, and yogurt. Participants have also increased their technical skills and, quite dramatically, their self-esteem.
