Beyond Belief

Beyond Belief is an award-winning documentary film by director Beth Murphy and Principle Pictures. Released in 2006, Beyond Belief documents how Susan Retik and Patti Quigley, young mothers widowed in the terrorist attacks of September 11th, reached out to support widows in Afghanistan who have themselves been afflicted by war and terrorism. The film chronicles Susan and Patti’s response to the loss of their husbands by choosing to embrace these widows and their families through a sense of shared humanity. It is a story that challenges us to consider what it means to live in a complex, global community at the start of the 21st century as we ask, “What kind of world do we live in? What kind of world do we want it to be?”

Their husbands were murdered. A colleague was kidnapped. And a nation on the other side of the world cries out for help. Now, two 9/11 widows fight their own war on terror. As they make the journey from comfortable suburban neighborhoods to the most desperate Afghan villages, they discover a powerful bond with each other, an unlikely kinship with widows halfway around the world, and a profound way to move BEYOND BELIEF.
