Who We Serve
Few places are harder for women than Afghanistan. For widows, the struggle is even greater.
Decades of war have left behind an estimated 2 to 2.5 million widows—one of the highest numbers anywhere in the world. Since the U.S. withdrawal in 2021 and the return of the Taliban, opportunities for women have sharply diminished. Widows who were already struggling to provide for their families now face even greater barriers, with restrictions on education, employment, and public life cutting off many paths to independence.
Despite these challenges, Afghan widows remain remarkably determined. They shoulder the responsibility of feeding their children, seeking out ways to earn a living, and holding their families together in the face of hardship. Their strength and perseverance continue to inspire us.
At Beyond the 11th, we stand with these women. Through trusted local partners, we provide widows with support that allows them to sustain themselves and their families. This can mean starting small businesses, gaining skills, or simply having the resources to put food on the table. While the world’s attention has shifted elsewhere, we remain by their side—helping to create opportunities for dignity, survival, and hope.
